Nonflammable and fast-drying degreasing solvents, such as Enviro Tech’s nonflammable NEXT 3000 fluorinated solvent and EnSolv® n-propyl bromide-based vapor degreaser, work like any other solvent. A chemical effectively encases and removes grease and other contaminants, but the reaction is just a bit faster. That means the degreaser spends less time in the engine, which is an added safety feature.

One of the most common and effective fast-drying solvents is isopropyl alcohol (IPA). Depending on the temperature of the cleaning environment, IPA can evaporate very quickly. And whatever the environment, it will always evaporate more quickly than water.
In terms of nonflammable cleaning solvents, it’s easier to rule out the solvents that are flammable. If you want a nonflammable solvent, steer clear of acetone, alcohol, benzene, toluene and xylene. It was theorized that unchecked degreasers and aerosols were contributing to rapid deterioration of that atmospheric layer. In the years since, industries have seriously updated how they operate. That new culture of environmentally conscious ingenuity has served forward-thinking companies well, and they tend to be far more prepared for new scientific findings and the consequential regulations.
Regulations vary across the globe, but the consensus is that industries must rein in the wasted byproducts associated with degreasing. Some have strict recycling requirements, some limit the products that can be used, and others do both.
In the United States, that’s largely dictated by the Clean Air Act. Virtually every type of solvent currently in use is subject to strict guidelines. The Act details ways that degreaser solvents must be reused or disposed. Similarly, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enforces what is known as the Solvent-Contaminated Wipes Rule, which dictates how solvent-contaminated wipes should be handled.
Regulations are under constant review. As new technologies become available, regulations are updated to minimize environmental impact. In that regard, regulators and industries work in tandem to improve degreasing methods.
As noted earlier, some degreasing methods are preferred over others in terms of their environmental impact. In vapor degreasing, solvent is boiled in a sump to create a vapor, which is contained in the unit by means of chilling coils at the top. This cold area forms a “cold barrier” that causes the solvent to return to liquid form and precipitate back down into the sump. As parts are lowered into the vapor layer, solvent condenses on them and runs off, carrying oil and contaminants with it.
After a few minutes in the vapor atmosphere, the parts can also be lowered into the liquid layer of the sump bath for additional cleaning effect. At the end of the cleaning cycle, the parts are lifted back out of the vapor bath. As they pass through the cold layer, the solvent quickly evaporates, leaving the parts clean and dry.
Where exceptional cleanliness is required, parts may be subjected to a final cleaning cycle — a dip into an adjacent rinse sump filled with solvent; spray cleaning with additional solvent; or ultrasonic cleaning. This ensures that any remaining contaminants are thoroughly removed in preparation for the sealing process.
While there are other casting cleaning methods available, most parts manufacturers prefer vapor degreasing for its significant benefits over the alternatives. For example, aqueous cleaning systems tend to be slower, more complex and more expensive to operate.

Parts are cleaned by lowering them first into the vapor layer. Here, solvent vapors hit the cooler surface of the parts and condense. As the droplets of liquid solvent drip off the parts, they carry grease, dirt and oil away with them. Once this happens, the parts may be lowered into the liquid solvent in the boil sump where contaminants are further washed away from every nook and cranny.
A last dip into the rinse sump containing pure liquid solvent ensures the removal of any remaining particles of dirt or grease. Finally, the parts are lifted back up past the cooling coils. Here, solvent quickly evaporates, leaving the parts impeccably clean, dry and ready for the next stage of the assembly process.

In some vapor degreasing systems, parts are put though a final, ultrasonic cleaning cycle to further remove any traces of contaminants from the parts. When done properly the parts should come out clean, dry and cool enough to handle, whichever method is used.
Vapor degreasing is gentle on parts. It doesn’t subject them to scrubbing, high-pressure spraying or high temperatures. It’s a quick and easy process that requires a minimum of training.
